Before the show, the lead singer and guitars, Nils Edenloff, said they were going to play a few new songs, which I presume are the three I cannot name. It’s also possible one or more of the unnamed songs are pre-Hometowns songs that I’ve never heard. If you have any ideas, let me know.

All songs recorded with an iPhone in my coat pocket. I will say these recordings sound comparable to the live experience–very bassy and drum-heavy–but they certainly do not do the songs justice. Enjoy and support the band!

This show also included The Minor White. I didn’t catch their entire set, but I enjoyed them quite a bit. And Nick Krill from The Spinto Band. I did catch his entire set.

A Few Laughs to Hold You Over

June 11th, 2009

Well, the recording did not go as well as planned. We knew there’d be times when recording would be interrupted, whether by vacations, travel, emergency room visits, angry programmers, rabid deer, global trade agreements, terrorism, or maybe even out of control photographers. We’re still developing contingency plans. In the meantime, here are a few laughs to hold you over whilst we diligently procrastinate on TSN 9.

Terminator SalvationMovies
We decided to review Terminator Salvation with a bit of a handicap. How did we like the newest installment in the Terminator franchise? How did we do? Have your own opinion? Tell us in the comments.

evil-huluNoise
The new Hulu Desltop inspires Matt to dust off his Tin Foil Hat as it mines Marc for all the data he’s worth (which is not much.) Either Matt is right about Hulu, or he’s the one who most recently updated the Hulu logo page on Wikipedia. You decide.

ethan-kidShout out!
This is our friend Ethan. He asked for some special attention and we delivered. Hope you enjoy this show, Ethan. (Note: Ethan is 20-something. Marc wanted to put a more recent photo, but Matt thought it wouldn’t be right without asking. So, here’s a photo of Ethan as a babe. At least I assume it’s Ethan, it was on his Myspace page.)

party-downMovies/Videos/Television
Party Down, a Starz original series, divides us. Brad Gottfred’s video (requires Facebook login) and upcoming movie, Orgies and the Meaning of Life (NSFW!) further divide us. And what does The A-Team have to do with any of this?

Oh, and Gamer isn’t really worth watching.

ps3Games
Marc wonders if Heavy Rain makes owning a PS3 worthwhile. Matt corrects him, accurately citing Heavenly Sword as reason for owning a PS3, but is it enough to shell out $400? They then reminisce about Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace, Gauntlet, and Marble Madness (which had an amazing soundtrack, by the way.)

in BbNoise
In Bb 2.0 is a collaborative music and spoken word project conceived by Darren Solomon from Science for Girls. Matt and Marc both created a song, both of which have been included between segments in this show. They can also be downloaded here and here.

TSN #6: Songs for People Who Like Free Music

Music

so_cowso_cow-live_at_wfmu_on_talks_cheapIt’s Over by So Cow
So Cow… Before I can retire from The Show Notes at peace with my efforts here, I must dedicate an entire show to Brian Kelly, aka So Cow, and his music. It’s that good. Even Marc agrees. –Matt

viviangirlsVivian Girls Live on WFMUAll the Time by Vivian Girls from Live at WFMU on Michael Goodstein’s Show.
Vivian Girls are a charming trio, despite their potential to sound a bit repetitive. -Marc

my-first-trumpet-1 (Matthias Steffen)my-first-trumpetDipl Link by My First Trumpet from the album Frerk released on the netlabel aerotone.
My First Trumpet is responsible for some really wonderful, moody songs. Throw on some headphones and go write a screenplay. -Marc

pinklepinkle-fftmeBlue Suit by Pinkle
Pinkle is the artist I want to think I’d be like if I had more dedication, practice, creative energy, and fewer vices. But I don’t, so I just have to admire, envy, and resent him and his page full of original songs, pristinely recorded, and given freely to the online world. –Matt

takka_takkatakka_takka-live_at_wfmuEverybody Say by Takka Takka
Takka Takka should be huge any day now… unless the Dave Matthews Band truly has ruined an entire genre of music for everyone else. And if that’s true, I hold Takka Takka up as the Eminem to Dave Matthew’s Vanilla Ice. Or something like that. –Matt

arctica-2arcticaSomekindofnarrative by Arctica from the album Selected Sessions.
Post rock influenced by godspeed you! black emperor? Yes, please. Arctica seem to keep their improvised songs under the typical 10+ minute mark suffered by similar bands. Maybe they’ll manage to keep Matt interested. -Marc

Nero's Day at DisneylandChicken and Cheese Cover AlbumChicken and Cheese 2 (Foot Village cover) by Nero’s Day at Disneyland from the Foot Village: Chicken and Cheese covers album.
Of the 40 Chicken and Cheese covers, I think this one sounds least like the original. -Marc

LOST! (In the Valley of Shadows, Can You See The Light??) by Lada Laika
Lada Laika’s latest work is ninety-nine percent of everything I love about chiptunes. Bouncy bouncy fun. –Matt

big-digits-1Big Digits - Live on WFMUMaking Progress by Big Digits found on the live performance on Marty McSorley’s Show (WFMU).
This song makes me want to rap (again). Yeah, I don’t want to talk about it. -Marc

Are Radiohead and godspeed you! black emperor too self indulgent? Should they make their musical point and move on? We’re at odds on this one–let us know what you think in the comments. (Photo: chrys)

Matt suggests Mean Girls to Marc as an example of a Tina Fey movie which does not suck, promising “it’s better than Bring it On.” Marc watches Mean Girl against his better judgment and reports back on his findings.

We’re both very excited about the game Prototype after watching the in-game video with commentary. The
cinematic trailer is also good.

Humpday, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Flash Games, and New Music from FMA

May 10th, 2009

This week The Show Notes takes a look at the trailer for promising comedy, Humpday. Some old cartoons are given the Hollywood treatment, G.I. Joe and Transformers 2, but The Show Notes wonders if they do justice to the beloved cartoons or massacre them. A handful of older flash-based games, including Fancy Pants Adventure: World 2, Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself), and Bloxorz, are replayed and spark a bit of debate. And, as always, more great finds from Free Music Archive challenge The Show Notes to pick just one.

Mic Problem Solved!

April 30th, 2009

I post this in hopes that others may find it useful. I’m using Windows Vista 64-bit and noticed that whenever I would clip, the microphone would automatically adjust to prevent further clipping. The problem was it really didn’t do a very good job and wouldn’t increase the level when I stopped being loud. Matt just blamed Vista for being terrible, but I knew there was a switch to flip somewhere that would turn this too-smart-for-its-own-good feature off. And I finally found it. Read more…
